Year 9 Empowering Girls Programme
BackNews - 14th Jul 2023
On Friday, the 14th of July, a group of our fabulous year 9 girls attended a celebratory luncheon hosted by the Empowering Girls Programme, at Winslade Manor Hotel and Restaurant. The girls who attended were invited to the event to celebrate their successful completion of this programme.
The Empowering Girls Programme is an initiative which was founded by Sarah Abrahams (a local businessperson), kindly funded by Howmet Aerospace Exeter and co-ordinated by Exeter City Council. This amazing and valuable programme is implemented through structured mentoring provided by a wide range of inspirational businesswomen from across the Exeter area. These businesswomen generously give up their time to assist year 9 students (in schools across Exeter) to explore their passions and aspirations for the future. Our year 9 students were fortunate enough to be mentored by five of these generous and aspirational businesspeople, some of whom have backgrounds in law, work for the Met Office, work managing construction companies and some who are architects.
The event was well attended with other year 9 students from local schools also participating in the celebrations. The luncheon provided a final opportunity for the girls to speak and thank their mentors. Each girl who attended the event was awarded a certificate and the book: 100 Inspiring Young Changemakers, which shines a spotlight on the lives of extraordinary young women making their mark on the world today. The book was gifted by the Empowering Girls Programme as a gesture of gratitude to the girls for their contribution in enabling the programme to continue to be a success.
It was a real privilege and honour to be a part of this event. A huge thank you to these girls for making the last afternoon of the academic year a truly memorable and enjoyable occasion.
