Writing Competition
BackNews - 22nd Jan 2024
Following the inspirational workshop some lucky Year 9 students enjoyed with award winning author, Manjeet Mann, the English Department ran a competition to write the first part of a spin off story for one of the characters from The Crossing, Ryan. Because Manjeet Mann was so impressed by the students participating in the workshop, she agreed to judge the competition entries. It was a difficult decision, but Manjeet selected Dais’s entry as the winner and Zara’s as a very close runner up. Here is the lovely feedback that Manjeet provided:
‘They are both so wonderful and clearly incredible writers, so it’s a very difficult decision. Both writers have understood Ryan’s character and have successfully continued the story in his voice. It’s beautiful to read. Massive congratulations to them both. I hope they continue writing.
I think Daisy just went that little bit further in building the world of Ryan’s story and as a reader you can see that world so clearly. I also really liked the way she played with the words on the page. ‘My head is a rollercoaster violently spinning up then down’ is not only a gorgeous line but I love the way it’s presented on the page. His emotional journey is really clear too and difficult to do in such a short piece. Really brilliant.
Both students were presented with prizes during their year group assembly.
Many congratulations to them both for writing such brilliant stories.
