On Saturday, 1st Feb, 36 determined Ten Tors Trainees set out on another training walk, prepared for a tough day on the moors. With heavy rain just days before, we expected challenging conditions including mud, bogs, and difficult terrain. However, Dartmoor had a surprise in store for us.
The rain had long washed away, and instead of sinking into the sodden ground, we found ourselves walking across firm, frozen terrain. The crisp air and clear skies made for an unexpectedly pleasant day, proving once again that on the moors, you must always "expect the unexpected!"
Our route took us from Postbridge, heading north to Sittaford Tor before navigating in the vicinity of Teignhead Farm and following the forest (or former forest) boundary wall where we were greeted by Mr. Hunt and two parent volunteers before we set off to around to Kes Tor. Their support, along with the regular staff who helped with minibus transfers, ensured everything ran smoothly and in timely manner, thank you all.
With renewed energy, we made our way back across the reservoir and towards our finishing point near the Warren House Inn. The total distance covered was just over 18km, and despite initial concerns, the conditions were on our side. Spirits were high, and it was another fantastic day of preparation for the challenges ahead.
A huge well done to all the students for their perseverance, and a heartfelt thank you to all the staff and volunteers who made the day possible. The countdown to Ten Tors continues, and if this walk has taught us anything, it’s to always be ready for the unexpected.
