This past Friday evening, the Ten Tors team took another step forward in their training journey. The night began with some hands-on tent craft, where trainees focused on pitching the perfect tent, a skill that will serve them well on Dartmoor with its weather. With tents securely in place, the group headed indoors for an unforgettable talk by Ian Ridley, the 276th Briton to summit Mount Everest. Ian’s story of perseverance through extreme conditions, vividly detailing his first unsuccessful attempt and his determined return for a victorious second climb to reach the top of the world, left everyone in awe of what can be achieved with determination and resilience.
With minds full of adventure and ambition, the team then tucked into a well-earned treat of Domino’s pizza and ice creams, a welcome comfort before a night under canvas (or waterproof polyester). As temperatures plummeted, the frost set in, covering the tents in a thick, icy layer. Alarms rang at 6:15 am, and the trainees emerged into the freezing morning to cook breakfast and break camp.
Once packed up, the teams set off for Dartmoor, where they were rewarded with the most spectacular change in weather. The biting frost was replaced by glorious blue skies and wispy clouds; perfect conditions for a day of walking. Each team followed a south-westerly route from Princetown, taking in some of Dartmoor’s most striking landscapes, including Crazy Well Pool, a place many had been learning about in English lessons.
The team should be incredibly proud of their efforts. Cold mornings make everything harder, but getting packed away swiftly is a top training priority. As ever the resilience, teamwork, and enthusiasm were brilliant to see.
A huge well done to all the trainees for their hard work, and a special thank you to Mr Ian Ridley for sharing his inspiring journey. This weekend was another step towards the Ten Tors challenge, and with each walk, the team is growing in confidence and skill. We look forward to the next adventure!
