Our Ten Tors teams set off from St Peter’s at 4pm on Friday, bound for East Okement Farm near Okehampton Army Camp. On arrival, they sprang into action, pitching tents and cooking dinner, only for rain to descend mid-meal! Undaunted, our trainees braved the weather, securing tents before the downpour worsened while finishing their meals. Their resilience shone through, setting the tone for a challenging yet rewarding weekend.
Saturday began at 6am with breakfast, fueling the teams for a 23km 690m elevation gain on a clockwise loop picking up; Cosdon Beacon, Little Hound Tor, Wild Tor, Great Kneeset, Okement Bunker, Dinger Tor, and East Mill Tor and then back to camp. Fog blanketed the moor, hampering visibility, but our walkers excelled, relying on timings, pacing, and constant compass work to navigate. After a tough day, they cooked dinner, enjoyed a surprise hot dog treat, and settled in for a quieter second night, mercifully free of Friday’s rain.
Sunday’s 6 am start saw tents packed and breakfast downed before an 18.6km & 360m height trek into the mist. The objectives for Sunday included; Steeperton Tor, Wild Tor, Wattern Tor, Manga Rails, Clapper Bridges at Scorhill Down and finally to north to Shilstone Tor to complete the walk. Once again, their navigation skills triumphed over the fog, rounding off an epic weekend. Teams were rewarded on Sunday at midday when the fog finally cleared giving beautiful views of Dartmoor which always seem more fulfilling after enduring bad weather.
We’re incredibly proud of everyone who took part. Facing Dartmoor’s unpredictable weather and rugged terrain, every team member showed grit and teamwork. On top of the resilience shown, extra effort was noted with fantastic team management and navigational prowess, guiding their groups through both days’ walks with confidence. Leadership and navigating was key to conquering the fog and keeping spirits high.
This weekend was a testament to what our St Peter’s teams can achieve. A huge well done to all, and heartfelt thanks to the staff and supporters who make these experiences possible. With every misty mile, our teams edge closer to Ten Tors glory bring on the next challenge!
